Dominique dominates jumps at Sugar Bowl meet

sugar_clegget    Dominique Clegget’s runway speed and leaping ability scored 20 points for Cabrini to help the Crescents finish fourth among the girls’ teams in the March 25 Allstate Sugar Bowl Track and Field Classic at Tad Gormley Stadium.
Clegget also set her sights on repeating those feats in the upcoming district and Class 4A championship meets by soaring 18-7 1/4 to win the long jump, then adding the triple jump with a distance of 36-7.
Clegget earned the Outstanding Female Field Performer award. She also joined Lisette Hrapmann, Tayla Celestine and Rakell Spencer to give Cabrini a second-place finish in the 400-meter relay in 49.77 seconds. McDonogh 35 won the event in a meet record time of 47.88.
It was one of 10 meet records to fall, including two of the meet’s longest-standing records. The team winners were John Curtis on the boys’ side and McDonogh 35 on the girls’ side.
St. Scholastica’s Samantha Zelden’s javelin throw of 127 feet, 8 inches won that event, and the Mount Carmel 1,600-meter relay team of Sarah Jeffries, Lauren Torsch, Jordan Owens and Caitlin Robert took first place with a time of 4:06.17.
But the stars of the day were McDonogh 35 junior Marcquita Stalbert and pole vaulter Devin King of Jewel Sumner.
Stalbert took the spring triple-crown, winning the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes, and helped the Roneagles to the 800-meter title (and a meet record). Stalbert also won the honor as a freshman in 2011.
King set a record of 17 feet, 2 inches in the boys’ pole vault, which is the top mark in the nation this year.
The winners among local Catholic school boys were St. Paul’s Zachary Albright, who was tested midway through the 800-meter run by Thomas Grace of Fairhope, Ala., but closed with a burst of speed to win the event in 1:55.64; Jesuit’s Neal Fitzpatrick, who won the 3,200-meter run; and Archbishop Shaw’s Cameron Troxler, whose 160-foot, 11-inch throw won the javelin competition.
