Prep notebook: Jesuit, Sacred Heart soccer champions

victory    Winning state soccer championships is nothing new to the teams at Jesuit and the Academy of the Sacred Heart. The two have combined to place 19 title trophies in their showcases.
The latest came last week when the Blue Jays notched their 11th title in a hard-fought, double-overtime 2-1 victory over St. Paul’s in the boys’ Division I championship match, while the Cardinals had little trouble dispatching Loyola Prep of Shreveport, 3-0, for the girls’ Division III crown, their eighth.
Sebastian Pereira-Pinzon scored the winning goal late in the second overtime to snap a tie. St. Paul’s scored first on a goal by Dan Garraway. Jesuit’s Joseph Kepper later sent the match into overtime when he scored the tying goal.
Senior Sarah Martin performed a hat trick by scoring all three Sacred Heart goals to give the Cardinals their eighth title.
Top-seeded St. Scholastica was a bridesmaid for the third straight year when the Doves lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to Lafayette in the girls’ Division I championship match. Abby Childress scored the Doves’ lone goal.
Girls eliminated
Seven local Catholic schools had short stays in the girls’ state basketball playoffs. Four were eliminated in the bi-district round, and the other three exited in the regional round.
The highest seed, Mount Carmel at No. 14, defeated Byrd High, 61-46, and then fell to No. 3 Ouachita, 63-47, in the Class 5A regional.
Dominican ousted Acadiana, 45-43, on a buzzer-beater, then lost to No. 2 Natchitoches Central, 62-33.
Cabrini, a 45-42 victor over Bastrop, lost to No. 5 St. Thomas More, 67-43, in a Class 4A regional game.
Four others, all having to travel because of low seedings, made early exits.
Ursuline Academy lost to McDonogh 35, 71-32, in a Class 4A game; De La Salle was eliminated by Northwest, 52-39; St. Mary’s Academy fell to South Beauregard, 61-40; and Xavier Prep, playing its final game before the school’s pending closure, lost at Baker, 90-42, in Class 3A first round games.
