Our Lady of Divine Providence: Great fun, great value

Our Lady of Divine Providence Summer Camp provides plenty of action for even the most energetic young campers. And for parents, the camp is extremely affordable.
The camp runs weekly from June 4-July 13, and the cost of a six-week session is $620 per camper with a multi-child discount. There is also a family plan available for two or more campers.
The days are packed with activities at Our Lady of Divine Providence. There will be weekly field trips (at least two or three per week), as well as magic shows, snowballs, storytelling, karate classes and swimming.
Our Lady of Divine Providence also offers roller skating, a video game room, hockey, line dancing, educational enrichment through play, basketball and a space walk.
Cooking classes and arts and crafts activities are offered daily. In addition, the camp will have a waterslide, softball, computer fun, talent show and kickball.
Small, personalized camp
“We’re a small camp – we only accept 100 children – but that allows us to be personalized,” said camp director Joanna Cancienne. “The kids go on a lot of field trips, and we bring in speakers and do some elaborate arts and crafts. We don’t just do paper crafts. For example, for Fathers Day we make barbecue aprons and things like that. We make really nice crafts.
“We’re very lucky that our parish allows us to put the funds back into the camp instead of this being just a money-making proposition. The kids get a lot more out of it.”
Cancienne is proud of her strong counseling staff. Many have come up through the ranks as junior counselors and have been with the camp for years. “We don’t have any counselors in charge of children who are younger than a senior in high school,” she said.
The campers also are hands-on in the kitchen, sometimes making their own snacks under the supervision of an adult teacher.
“They made king cakes and taco dip – they just love that hands-on approach,” Cancienne said. “They’ll make edible play-dough. There’s a video game room. It’s not (overly) structured, but it’s structured. They go through each activity every 30 minutes to keep their attention.”
The camp day runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and extended care is available.
